Glucosamine & Chondroitin
I seem to remember hearing about this a few months ago when I had an old knee problem play up, on account of the colder weather. That time I tried the warm caster oil wraps, which seemed to help. My knee's been aching a bit again recently, though not as badly, so thought I'd try the pills this time.
I tend to be more than a little skeptical about the Vitamin & Mineral industry ( yes me, who'd have thought it ) but in my new Pascalian mood, I figure all I have to lose is a few bucks and yet the world to gain, or if not the world then one less thing that irritates
As you can see in the picture, 60 tablets in this packet, so a month to try it out.
The symptoms I'm experiencing at the moment is an ache in my left knee. Doesn't effect my practice that much, I can fold it up into lotus OK, but it's not as comfortable as the right leg. It's something I've had off and on for twenty years or so, an old Aikido injury that was operated on and plays up in cold weather. I'm half hoping this doesn't work as I don't want to have to paying out for a winter's worth of these every year.
Anyway see if it works, watch this space.
Karandavasana
Interesting thing happened yesterday re the duck. I opened my arms a little wider and came up more easily and without mashing my chin on the mat.
Obviously I tried that before but could never get back up. Arms closer together, jazz hands, tips of thumbs touching was the only thing that worked.
Perhaps now that I've built the strength to get back up I can start taking my arms a little wider and that will help me to cleaner Karandavasana.

Tumeric pills (or just a spoonful of the spice) also work well. It's used to treat arthritis.
Oh, and what culture uses a lot of tumeric?? hmmmm.... Not an accident.
Hmmm... Great idea, I'm having the exact same issue with right knee. Teacher also suggested vats oil rubs... I may try the pills along side and compare notes. And tumeric Liz, hmmm who would've thought...
Hey Grimmly,
First time commenting here.
Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate help with preservation/restoration of cartilage. If your injury is not cartilage-related these might be of little help. My two cents.
Take two of these a day for an effective dose.
Also, these are not suitable for vegetarians (can't remember whether you're one or not!)
My first teacher (old school certified ashtangi) used to take these as a matter of prevntion. I guess anything can help with old age!
Best wishes and thanks for your writings.

just finished a later than scheduled practice, knackered now. Shifting to the upstairs room is wiping me out. Going from a couple of months of not sweating drop to sweating buckets.
Definitely something to this wider arm Karanda thing. Came down slower and with ore control and likewise going back up, just brushing the chin on the mat. It's harder than with the arms closer together though. Seems to make sense to start with arms closer together style and then change to the wider arms later.
Like the tumeric tip Liz, must be cheaper than these tablets.
Claudia was thinking of you and your knees, was going to mention it to you.
Thanks for coming by and commenting FoFaS, your name sounds familiar, must have come across it somewhere else. Thanks for this, think it probably is cartilage related. But not suitable for Vegatarians! Oh dear, I am one, do you remember why. How about tumeric I wonder, perhaps it's a veggie option. Time to hit google.
ahhh Chondroitin comes from shellfish, that's what you meant. That's Ok I eat fish.
Hey Grimmly,
Check your package rather than Google for the origin of chondroitin sulfate. It can sometimes be of mammalian origin, or be extracted from shark cartilage (not ideal either...).
I also seem to remember that these are supposed to help with ligaments as well.
Tumeric is definitely vegetal!
Hope your knee gets better.
