Grabbing heels from the air. Part I

Saw a video on YouTube a couple of days ago of somebody bracing their hands behind their head as they dropped back into Kapotanasana (can't find the video now). Liz had suggested something similar a while ago but this seemed to go even further, not just having the hands over the head but really locking them there.

Just holding them there wasn't working so well, I would tend to allow them to drift out, locking them in was interesting though and I managed to catch my heels from the air.

Just about anyway, grabbed one (my left in the picture) but my feet and hands were sweaty by then and I slipped off off the right. Also when I drop back to the floor and walk in I tend to push my hips forward, this way my hips tended to come back and I couldn't work out how to get them forward again.

Interesting though and worth exploring a little more.

Found the video, bit different than I remembered it, the Kapo is a 1:24. Nice lift up to jump back too.

I think I saw the same video the other day on YouTube. Really cool...don't think I've ever seen anyone grab their heels like that. I'm planning on trying this out over the weekend. Looks like you're having success with the technique. :)

Saw Owl do it once on a video, most amazing thing, straight back and over and onto the heels, one fluid motion, very very cool. Intermediate tomorrow so will give it another try. Think I need to hit the heels push up and the hips forward then settle in. good luck with yours at the weekend.

Oh that is cool! He uses his head to push his hands back. I use a similar technique in LBH all the time, but never thought of it here.

I bet you'll have it this spring!!!

I'm...worried? when I see that sharp angle in his lower back. In his kapo the negative space inside the shape his body makes is a perfect triangle with that sharp bend at the top. My back whimpers seeing that.

I like it boodie, finding it much less strenuous than the whole walking in pushing up walk in some more, push up again......

Does look scary maya. Just looked at mine from this morning, nowhere near as sharp, more like a shark fin than a triangle.

I might try it if I were doing the pose twice, but during the course of my reg week day practice (2nd to Kapo / 3rd to Dighasana, plus tick tocks!) I'm not so into working that hard, repetition anyway.

I really like the pushing up through the arms cause it stretches my tight shoulders! I used to do it in two stages though & now just one is enough.
