Developing a home practice Parts 1-27

I received an email this from A. this week asking me how I started and I guess developed my home practice. I was going to direct her to the link to these Developing a home practice posts but it tends to link to the most recent first. This then is an attempt to put it all in the correct order. Bit awkward doing this so let me know if I've screwed up any of the links.

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10 Part 11a Part 11b Part 12 Part 13 Part 14 Part 15a Part 15b Part 16 Part 17 Part 18 Part 19 Part 20 Part 21a Part 21b Part 22 Part 23 Part 24 Part 25 Part 26a Part 26b Part 27

The last of these is from September 09 so need to do a few more to bring my things up to date.

I read all related posts on developing a home practice parts 1-26. Sounds very similar to my experience. thanks so much for obsessing on the jump backs and thrus. I am now obsessed again on doing this. My thoughts and experiences on this practice are same as yours, except I am a yoga teacher having certifications from Sivananda and a local Joyflow teacher training. I do led class 6 times per week similar to Swenson's short forms for 75 minutes. I must admit it does interfere with my home practice which needs improvement. I have tried going to local studios, but lose interest, for it is multi style yoga, even the Ashtanga class is not really Ashtanga. Like you I went to an Ashtanga studio twice that is two hour drive from home, and drew same conclusions. although I do like going to workshops in Ashtanga by certified Ashtanga teachers from the Mysore Institute. Best wishes for the new year. As for your not being a teacher, IMHO you are a teacher, for I learned more from you blog than a whole month at a teacher training. Thanks...again.

I just read these posts again, looking for some tips and inspirations for home practice - so thanks! Not sure you are aware, but Part 24 Diet, the writings aren't visible, unless it's the problem with my browser? Can only see two pictures of dishes? (love bibimbap by the way!)

I'm sure I read somewhere in your blog, you practice VK in the morning and Ashtanga in the evening and you mentioned your reasons. I am doing a dynamic flow or Ashtanga in the morning and yin or gentle hatha in the evening (morning should awaken and energise, evening restore and relax - I have been told and read somewhere), but don't think it's working for me so gonna swap it around. I found my body is still a bit stiff in the morning, even after a few Surya Namaskars, harder to get deeper into the poses and this frustrates me cuz I know I can do better.

oh, hope you are feeling better now

Thanks HD, feeling a bit better up for a proper practice this morning.

I've sorted out the problem with the text to 24, i think it's from when i changed over the template design for the blog, i should check perhaps there are other posts with the same problem.

The switch has been working for me the last week or two, i did it because i was feeling stiff in the morning too, especially now it's getting colder, also I've always missed meditating in the morning and it seems to fit better with my vinyasa krama practice ( less sweaty for one). Also, if you think about it, the asana is supposed to prepare you for meditation by getting rid of the rajas but in the early morning after waking up your pretty chilled anyway, it's in the evening i need raja bustin' ashtanga practice. i do cut back on the backbends in the evening though as it seems to affect my sleep patterns.

Hi Grimmly,

After reading at your blogs and the asanas pictures I am so inspire...

I am working on supta kurmasana in my home practice and would like to know if you have some recommendations how can I approach this posture.
It seems like I have to choose between binding my hands or binding my feet right now. They don't seem to want to work together....

Please let me know

HI LiLi Supta kurmasana is tricky, How about working on getting the legs as far up the arms as possible towards the shoulders, bind the hands and then work the feet closer together. After a few weeks shift the focus and work on crossing the feet and forget about the bind for a while, fingertips or just hands on the back, then start shifting the focus back to getting the bind back.
here are a couple of posts on Supta Kurmasana, an early one

a later one on the foot shuffle

and this one from my book

hope that helps a little.

Hi Grimmly,

Thank you so much for the supta kurmasana tip. I will give a try.
I know asthanga yoga requires a lot of patience and discipline.

After reading your 1-26 blogs I am SO amazed that you went through all the practice on you own and made a big achievement. I like the asana pictures, very inspiring

I started practicing ashtanga for a few months though I am not a yoga beginner but found that some of the posture in the primary serie is somehow very difficult to achieve.. but with my 6 days practice i do see a bit improvements :)

I don't go to the studio either cause it is too far for me ( 2 hours drive) So I am kind of learning throug dvd, google and your blog :)

Thanks again for sharing your experience.
