So here's a video of imperfect but functional Jumps. There are a couple in the style of Sharath and Kino, a straight leg jump through that I'm trying to learn for the course next week (running out of time). Jump through to one leg bent, half lotus jump back, full lotus jump back. Jump back from Marichi and from Eka pada sirsasana and back through again. Finally an attempt at jumping through and back without crossing the legs, again for the coming course (not gonna happen). Bit out of practice as we don't do so many in Vinyasa Krama (although there is a little section at the back of Ramaswami's book) but they're coming back. Would still love to get that lift from the shoulders that Lino and Swenson have...
because YES you can learn to practice from books, videos and the internet.

OK, I'm first to congratulate you :) Great work grimmly, great blog and great progress. I've tried to nail straight lehs jumb back - I am able to do it Lino Miele Marichy I and III way. Doing it from dandasana - pffff, no way:)
Thank you Indra, feels kind of like a birthday. These are a bit iffy, didn't warm up, kind of spur of the moment thing, sure I've done smoother ones. Straight leg one I find very tricky, comes and goes. I find I'll be fine till half way through Primary and then lose it completely and have to put my hands on books till it comes back again. Just about got it for the course though.
Congratulations G, on the 500! well done, you know I am a big fan of the blog, keep coming to it daily, so useful!
And yeah on the jump through at the end!, you did do it without crossing the legs, hurray!
Congrats, Grimmly. Loved the video. I saw a couple of things I'd like to try -- the marichy A exit especially looks like fun. As usual, I'm leaving your blog with new ideas. Thanks for all the great content!
How cool is that? You should repost one of your earliest jumpback attempt vids along side. Such progress in only two years!!! Congrats on that and on the 500 posts.
Hey, did you trim your mat to fit into the corner? Cool. Except I kept worrying that you were going to slam your toes into the wall with all that jumping back, :). Ever happened? Ouch!
Thanks Caludia, just made that uncrossed jump back but no way I'll be getting jumping back through...arms are too short : )
Can imagine you going for the Maria A one. think I picked that up off one of Jason's Detroit yoga videos, Thanks.
Thank you too Maya, there's a link at the beginning to my fist post which has a Jump back video on it.
500 seemed a lot but I think Laruga just marked 1000 in not much longer than me, I've been slacking it seems.
I trimmed the mat originally to train myself to use less mat with the intention of going to the shala. then I had the idea of cutting the off cut diagonally to fit the corner, kind of works. Perhaps there's a market for it, i just design mats for corners.
I FIND YOUR EARNEST DEDICATION INSPIRING:-) HAVE FUN IN LALA LAND.
Thank's Chris.
I read your profile and am so impressed with your progress. I still struggle with chaturanga and have this weird love hate relationship with ashtanga yoga.
Way to go! 500 is definitely a lot!
you're sneaking EkaPada Bakasana pose out of marichyasanasa A in one transition
i have to do the jump thru like the first three you do. but i am trying to figure out what to do with the eyes. where are they supposed to be looking? i'm asking myself lately. I am not allowed to do the glide thru with straight legs. but i don't get the donkey kick up of the crossed legs assembly that you achieve. i end up without getting the legs thru, so for me the glide thru used to get the job done better.
i'm amazed at how you do the last jump back with the straight legs. i think that's Lino-like.
cheers,
Arturo
word verif "dozeddis" Grimmly does this.
Thanks Sraddha, perhaps 500 is enough, though maybe one more with an overview of the course.
Just kind of snuck that in Arturo. My straight leg is still clumsy but functional. In my ashtanga (sneaking a morning practice in before the asana class) I seem to be moving away from the Kino to the Sharath, kind of like the economy. Lino like? thanks for that but surely not, Lino has that lift from the shoulder that i can't seem to work out. thanks for making my day though.
hehe. i'd like to know how going from the Kino to the Sharath is like going the way of the economy. now that would be a deep yogic discussion. however, i do remember that Kino teaches the dangly version, the one you do first. i believe she recommended it for building strength. that's the one i'm supposed to do.
Cheers,
Arturo
Grimmly, you're not thinking of giving up the blog are you??? No, no, I'm looking forward VERY MUCH to your NEXT 500 posts! And surely a one month course will need, oh, dozens of posts, not a mere ONE. Please? Pretty please? I mean, you'll do what you need to, of course, but here's one fan of your writing that would be terribly sad to see you sign off...
Arturo I meant it as
( I ) kinda like the economy (of movement) but come to think of the UK economy seems to be all about cutting back at the moment so perhaps it works.
I don't know yet Maya. The blog was mainly about asana and developing a practice. I'm pretty comfortable with my VK adapted Primary and 2nd at the moment, don't feel the need to practice 3rd so what to write about. I'm more interested in other aspects of Yoga recently but don't really feel like writing about that just as I never really wanted to write about my meditation practice or philosophical interests.
I'm tempted to start a new Vinyasa Krama blog, that way anyone who goes there knows what they're getting, or will do, that might be interesting, 500 posts there perhaps.
For now I just want to take some time to absorb the course (which is excellent btw). I'll probably do one more post in a couple of parts here, a course overview and review for anyone interested in taking it in future years.
but just for you (as it's the comment section), a typical day
Get up at 5 and do a couple of hours Ashtanga VK, alternating Primary and 2nd, in the stairwell near my room. Then a three hour asana class, working through the sequences in the book (loving it as you can imagine). Tough when done properly, my morning ashtanga sometimes feels quite light in comparison.
Lunch
Two hours of Yoga Sutras that just fly by, in awe of R.
An hour break then a two hour Pranayama class, some work on chanting the pranayama mantra, a few asana, kapalabhati then (already) 80 rounds (thirty to forty minute) of Pranayama.
I tend to head of to the Library after class, they run all kinds of yoga courses here so there are a few old texts hidden away.
Saturday we spent all day chanting the Sutras, sunday was spent on Subtle body anatomy, both flew by.
Thanks for the support though.
Wow, Grim, that sounds amazing! I would love to be sitting in on those yoga sutra classes, holy cow. As for your blog, call it whatever you like, if you write it, I'll be reading, :).
Sadly only one more Sutra class left but then we only have a the last part of Chapt IV left. Would kind of like to go through it again now I have a better grasp of the whole thing. It's not just that R knows his sutras backwards (he's old school, you give him the first word then he quotes the rest of the sutra, breaks it down word by word, phrase by phrase and riffs on it awhile before taking questions or moving on to the next) but it's the depth and breadth of his knowledge. He'll bring in all these other texts, a sloka from here, sutra from there, some old story from the vedas or passage from the upanishads or puranas, just brings the whole thing alive. He's quietly spoken in asana but in sutras he's this powerful speaker/lecturer/teacher who's just full on for two hours, amazing. I imagine he'll be the same through the next couple of weeks on Krishnamacharya's writings.
Thanks for the kind words too maya.
Lovely video. I can just imagine it with Van Halen's (or Madonna's?) "Jump" in the background. By the way, a small tip for allegedly short arms: Try to cross your legs a little higher at the sheen, above the ankle, especially when you jump back. That really did the trick for me in terms of clearing the floor (as Gregor Maehle puts it).
Thank you Shiran and i agree, crossing higher up the knee helps, slipping into bad habits here.
