The Dread

Anyone else get this? Early evening your looking forward to the mornings practice, late evening....the Dread.

This afternoon I'm having a tooth pulled, yet it's the thought of practice not the visit to the Dentist that gives me pause to groan.

It's my day off, practice on hold for a couple of hours, always a mistake, should have got up at my usual time and just got on with it, now it feels feels like.... like my bed is the Shire and my mat lies somewhere behind the gates of Mordor, that's it my black Manduka is Barad-dûr.

Cowboy up Frodo, Intermediate this morning.

Yesterday's Primary was of course fine....once I dragged myself through the Mines of Moria.

I only get the dread on the morning itself. I was comfy in my shire today, from 6am until 7am, when I finally dragged myself out to practice.

I've noticed though that the two practices that have been preceded by the dread over the past week or so have actually turned out to be the best. I think it's to do with making a concious decision to go surrender to it, to just go through the practice and see what comes up, rather than being a bit too gung-ho about 'achieving' any given pose.

Dear Grimmly
Yes, I get the dread, usually in the morning before going. I have to be stern with myself to get out on time. I would get more asanas in if I left 15 minutes earlier. When I get to the shala and start practicing, I usually forget why I dreaded it in the first place. You have been understanding about my causes, yes, that I have a lot of work, have to deal with travel, shala changes, etc. Now you can throw in weather. We'll see how getting there in the cold in a bike is going to work out. I just realized this is the fifth location of the shala in a year and a half. I hope this one works the best for my teacher and the students. It is certainly the most convenient for me. I hope the tooth removal, or the period of healing afterwards, is not too painful. You may have to take it easy on asanas, eh? Yin yoga?

But every once in a while there is a Tom Bombadil practice full of singing and gladness, or a rousing round of Elrond's dinner table practice where Smart People discuss Important Things, or, [hushed whispered] a Lothlorien practice, like, maybe once or twice a year. Holiest of holies.

I live for those.

That old hamstring pull that flares up every now and then, that's the balrog.

Karandavasana is my Shelob pose, makes Kapo Ungoliant I guess.

I grew up with it, my mum was a Tolkien nut, Tom Bombadil and his bloomin blue coat and yellow hat freaked me out a bit. Living in Oxford I used to drink in his JR's Pub, have a soft spot for this old map.

My mum gave me delux edition when I went traveling, it had kind of bible pages, sadly I caught my traveling companion tearing out pages to make roll ups and I had to use it for loo paper when I caught Bacillary Dysentry, The Field of Cormallen was pretty much the only chapter to survive (never liked the bit where they go back to the Shire).

Sorry Arturo, missed your comment coming in.

i always wonder if my discipline would be that good if I had to get up, get dressed, jump in a car or catch the tube to the Shala, I doubt it. Seems such a pain to bundle up for the cold then strip down to the yoga gear and bundle up again afterwards. Yes hope that this new shala works out for you, heck I hated shifting my mat from one room to another, this practice likes routine, stability, constancy.

tooth came out well enough, thank you. Thursday is usually my rest day, when I take one, but I shifted it to today, just do a light VK practice this evening.
