Into the second week of practicing along with Sharath's led primary, I've settled into the captured stream from Joisyoga. They seem to have stopped streaming this on a loop and though Sharath is now teaching in Encinitas there's nothing about streaming Friday's led from there. My Guess is that they'll turn the NYC stream into a DVD. I'd buy it if they do, I prefer it to Sharath's CD and DVD, it's quite a bit slower, room to breathe.
I noticed while trying to see if they were streaming from Encinitas that their 'boutique' is online now, us guys get a t-shirt, that's it. Seems Sharath has a new DVD out too, half Primary, didn't I hear somewhere that Kino is doing a half primary as well?
The born-again Ashtangi thing is going well, enjoying the led primary every morning but it's exhausting, did I really practice at that pace every morning? I'm sweating buckets and kind of feel as if I've hit a reset button or having An American werewolf in London transformation going on, but spread over a couple of weeks rather than two minutes. I seem to be getting leaner, feel longer, limbs lengthening, becoming stronger perhaps, fitter too.
Switched my eating around from a light breakfast and dinner to a light breakfast and lunch then nothing but a banana or two until breakfast, working well, feel much lighter or at least emptier during practice.
Playing a little bit by the rules, even have my chin to my knees rather than forehead, hell why not, got my drishti going and everything. I also took a rest day on Saturday, complete day off, not even pranayama. That was quite nice actually, felt it Sunday though, hard first practice back.
The plan is to do a month of this and then perhaps add 2nd up to kapo for a month, then up to Karanda and split the thrid month. Never really did it that way, just jumped into 2nd ( just checked, i kind of jumped in, worked through the series a few times on my day off then did some primary to kapo for a while then primary to Karanda before splitting, so if not adding poses then adding sections), so like the chance to explore. But for now keep this up for a month, following along with Sharath's led, just as if I was in Mysore. That reminds me, I was asked two questions...
1. Now I'm a born-again Ashtanga, do I have plans to go to Mysore?
2. If so would I be interested in becoming Authorised to teach?
Mysore....I don't know, I've thought about it recently, especially since I sold a Sax last week and could buy a ticket. I just can't think of a good enough reason. I don't even practice in a shala here let alone go over there. If I went I could only go for a month so would only be practicing primary and I can do that here, am doing that here and as intensely as if I was in that room. I drop back and come up here pretty deeply (stop the video to do a few of those then pick it back up at paschi) so don't need to go for that. There are a few bloggers it would be nice to have the chance to practice with but I'm the least social person I know so would mostly be keeping myself to myself. Be nice to spend some time in India but there are other areas I think I'd rather visit than just stay in Mysore for a month. Be nice to see where Krishnamacharya taught all those years ago though. I don't know, see how I feel a few months from now, when does the shala open again, when do people tend to go, end of the year?
The second question amused me, thanks for that P. Would I like to be authorised to teach Ashtanga? Again, I don't go to a shala and don't particularly agree with hands on adjustments, be a bit hypocritical of me to consider teaching in that way, although I hear there are some ashtanga teachers who rarely adjust physically. Then of course there's the integrity issues of planning to go out there, what, three of four times, with that intention and the feeling of selling out I'd have from keeping silent and toeing the party line when I've questioned so much in the past and still have questions or concerns. ( Not critical of other teachers here, it would just be an issue for me because of my... well documented, concerns regarding the practice) No, no, no plans on that score, don't think they'd have me anyway.
Besides, though I enjoy practicing Ashtanga I don't think it's for everyone, it works for me and I seem to kind of need this kind of practice, at least for another couple of years but If I was to recommend a yoga practice then it would be Vinyasa Krama. No plans to seek to teach that either at the moment although I guess I would if someone asked, would feel obliged to given that Ramaswami has shared so much.
Re Vinyasa Krama, I'm employing Arturo's approach in the evenings after work and working through the different sequences, picking up where I left off the day before. Twenty minutes of Asana before pranayama pratyahara and japa mantra meditation. Seems to be working out nicely thanks Arturo.
One thing that did strike me recently, followed a question from Claudia concerning whether I considered Sharath to be preserving the lineage of Krishnamacharya. My answer was that I thought he was preserving the lineage of later Jois, which is fine of course, but that perhaps Manju might better be considered to be preserving early Krishnamachary ( of the Yoga Makarnada and Mysore) through teaching more in a manner of early Jois ( which I assume to be closer to how he (Jois) was taught/guided by krishnamacharya). But I don't know just speculating.
If then I'm interested in continuing/preserving/promoting Krishnamacharya's teaching, both early and later periods, then I should probably try and attend Manju's workshops and possibly, one day his TT's.
Has everybody downloaded their copy of Krishnamacharya's yoga Makaranda?

course have downloaded, read, still reading, enjoying it too, wrote about it today, thanks for the link.
As per the lineage, this is a good topic, what is lineage? BKS Iyengar spent 2 years with Krishnamacharya then as far as we can tell he pretty much lost contact and did his own thing, Jois maybe a little more time... then there is the later students, yes the ones that spent ages with him, including his own son, Ramaswami, AG Mohan.
I am giving this a lot of thought, even people who went to Guruji in the 70s got different things that we get now, same with the big K...
I suppose lineage is a living thing, something that fluctuates then again even you point out how the Yoga Mala is heavily influenced by the Yoga Makaranda...
What is lineage? good pondering material here
As per Mysore, I agree with you, if visiting it IS best to keep to oneself otherwise much energy is lost, but I found in the lates trip groups or cells of meditation forming, and then there is always the "taking rest" for the 4 or 5 or 2:50 ! AM wake up...
I need to replace my broken camera, posts are getting wordy. I never really know what's going on with words like guru and lineage, in what sense they're being used and when. Do Manju and Sharath reflect the same lineage for example, how different is the practice now from the 50's of Yoga Mala or the 30's of Yoga Makaranda.
It was interesting, a couple of years back, trying to practice how it used to be be, full vinyasa, eight breaths etc, exploring roots and interesting too, this year looking at how much you can bring it (Krishnamacharya's early teaching) in line with his later teaching, all interesting experiments.
I think I've come to the conclusion finally that it is what it is and whatever it is and however it came to be what it is, seems to work for me so just let it be.
The only thing with Mysore is that I wonder if I might not regret going at least once. if the opportunity comes up I'll probably go and get it over and done with.
Been toying with the idea of Mysore myself lately... Someday. Maybe.
As for the Jois boutique, I saw the pages of "yoga lifestyle" clothing for women, then clicked on the men's out of curiosity, only to find a single jersey cotton t-shirt. What's the deal with that? Dudes aren't about to be fooled into thinking their clothes have anything to do with their practice? As opposed to women, who clearly require frequent purchases of unrelated apparel to stay motivated? It's all very odd and, were I personally invested in the Jois family and lineage, I'd be offended.
So, when you went on to 2nd Series, you just tackled the whole thing at once? I actually really like doing Primary + 2nd through Laghu (soon to be Kapo), which I'm practicing now. A bit long, perhaps, but it feels like a very well rounded practice. It's a good thing my teachers started me on 2nd series so quickly or a I may have wandered from Ashtanga since Primary is a bit heavy on the hamstrings and shoulders.
I think it's just that guys, as ever, are an afterthought, was hoping there would be some shorts etc, always curious about what guys feel comfortable practicing in. For the record I tend to go for Nike dryfit lined running shorts for Primary and Nike dryfit compression shorts for 2nd and Advanced ( now where's my Nike sponsorship). Either for VK.
Kind of dived in to 2nd. Think I worked through it a few times on my day off then started practicing primary up to Kapo for a couple of months then added all the LBH and started working on karandavasana. Somewhere along the way I started doing the first half of Primary and then 2nd for a bit and then ended up doing half a week primary half a week 2nd. A while back i decided that perhaps I did like 2nd afterall and practiced just that with Primary on Friday.
If I did it again, oh yeah. it seems I am, I think i'd be a bit more structured about it. Primary to kapo is nice and Primary to Karanda OK but a little long. I'm going to splice together the Jois primary and 2nd series videos in different combinations and practice them as a led.
I made a list of all the postures I thought I should work on a while ago and it turned out to be pretty much the same as 2nd series pus a smidgin of 3rd, go figure.
Enjoying primary at the moment but looking forward to adding the backbends again next month
What software do you use to capture videos and streams offline?
I used Snapz pr X on the mac on 15 day trial. Not great, video and audio went out of synch half way through but that's Ok because I'm only using the audio for practice.
Thanks for the link to the book, another one in my IBooks library.
With Mysore it never occurred to me that I would ever want to go, but the more committed to the practice I have become over the last few years, the more the seed has germinated. Though I have no plans to teach.
You should certainly go, after all the hassle you put up with just to get a weekend, can imagine how much you'd love having a month ( or more?). Plus all that work on backbends.
I find the gaps between considering it are getting shorter and the time spent taking the idea seriously longer.
Guess we've got, what, another five years or so before we need to worry about considering the teaching issue
SKPJ spent many, many years with his guru.
Going to Mysore X number of times does not mean authorization will be offered.
I think that guru parampara is not necessarily hereditary. Guess who was called to SKPJ's side during his final time in the hospital?
Hint: he has withdrawn his certification.
Dear Grimmly
Of course, I have to thank you for the idea on practicing VK. I'm glad you're sharing regarding your style of eating at the moment. I had sent out a question to the nutrition newsgroups about my anticipated eating now that I'm going to a new job which will demand longer hours than my present one. I'll copy you on the email. I'll be returning home so late that maybe eating some fruit after 6:00 might be the thing to do. I've noticed you look leaner in the recent videos.
Cheers,
Arturo
Though I had a random thought about teaching some weeks ago (REALLY random), I will not be pursuing it anytime soon. simply because I have too many things to work on right now - family, work, other hobbies. and my practice still needs loads of work.
But one day, maybe one day, like you, I may wanna go to Mysore and get it over and done with.
Wonder how old Sharath would be then...
I make it around ten, eleven years. in two stints 1927- 29 and then 1932-41. We know about the latter (Yoga Makaranda, Yoga Mala the Mysore palace situation etc) but I'm ever so curious about that first stint of one to one teaching. How similar was it to how K taught later in Mysore, was it closer to how K was taught himself, by Brahmachari. Not that it matters of course but I find this stuff fascinating as you all know, wonder if he told Manju much about period.
CK do you have Lino's 2nd and 3rd series DVd with Gwendolyn, is it like his primary, full vinyasa or more ...up to date. Going back to basics with my Primary this month with Sharath but want to do the same with my 2nd series next month, tighten it up. I have the the SKPJ yogaworks one but it's a little fast.
Was that me Arturo, thinking about it I seeme to remember Ramaswami suggesting such a way to approach it. I saw your mail re diet, will you post any interesting responses you get from the forum?
It's curious cory, I've taught so many different things but never really been that keen to teach yoga. See you in Mysore twenty years from now : ), Sharath's daughter will probably be assisting then.
I don't have Lino's DVD. I believe it's available in Euro (PAL), and not US (NTSC), format.
Besides, I actually practice with him (which far better than watching something on TV). Not to mention the ten months in Mysore and two in the US with SKPJ.
If I went it would need to be 6 weeks at least. So many who go for a month say it's over in no time and they wish they had stayed longer. I am hoping now I'm getting my fitness back to be able to crack the standing up issue.
It would be nice to be able to practice in a Shala without all the travel stress.
Grimmly - Since you have some extra cash and are re-committing to ashtanga (and correct vinyasa) and live not far from Italy, why not do Lino's in-depth study, June 5-18?
Well funny you mention it, was just about to ask you if you knew he was offering this. Saw it just now while trying to find a demo of his 2nd and 3rd (thought you as his student might have seen a copy, didn't know about the PAL thing). Interesting....and tempting (although I'd need to sell another sax). Always meant to take a workshop with him, if only for the full vinyasa element.
Seems very much a teaching thing though. Perhaps I'll try and take a workshop with him this year, carry on tightening up my primary and 2nd and then think about it next year. I've enjoyed teaching M. Vinyasa Krama ...hmmmm. Couple of weeks in Tuscany too, love Italy.
PS I take it back practiced with the Jois Yogaworks dvd just now and was looking through the Intermediate, it's actually not a bad pace, less time to get in and out of the posture than Sharath leaves but more time on the breath count..
Yogaworks intermediate is a really nice pace. A few extra breaths in ustrasana because Maty moved her hands to her ankles instead of her feet and it takes a moment for her to realize Guruji is correcting her. I always smile at that part, because I recognize the feelng of being in the "yoga haze" and only slowly wondering "Oh! are you talking to me??" Daunting to imagine being caught out on a recording for posterity, and yet so charming to see.
It's nice that you're teaching M vinyasa krama! Does she have a practice now or just dabble in order to, kind of.. get you?
M takes up yoga, bound to happen :)
Hope this is not too personal, you can just ignore it :)
Dear Grimmly
No one is offering any advice in the nutrition lists. It's probably because they feel I should know what to do, after practicing CR for 8 years. I know eating late or heavily at that time is not recommended. I think I just need to prepare foods on weekends, ready to be prepared quickly. Here in China, we don't have the conveniences of prepared foods (chopped and washed for you) that they have in the UK. We have to prepare a lot.
Cheers,
Arturo
hey Susan.
M was getting a lot of aches, probably from carrying so many files back and forth to work. I taught her a short form Ashtanga routine (Swenson'ish a while ago. Now she does a short tadasana routine, some Sury A's and B's and Paschimottanasana. Mainly though it's prep for her morning vipassana which is where she's really at. Added some Bow sequence poses to help her wake up a bit
Sunday's we practice together or I teach her something new, it's nice, enjoying it.
Hope you don't mind me sharing beloved.
