Loving this hands free lotus, no end of possibilities. Yesterday we had the Jump/float to Urdva Kukkutasana, I posted the long version, see what I did there, build up a bit of suspense, a smidgin of tension, will he wont he etc. here's the good bit.
Did a couple of more of those this morning to consolidate it but that got me thinking. If you can float onto your arms, shouldn't it be possible to jump/float all the way through, a padmasana jump through if you will.
Yep.
I like this one, best of all, as a lead in to baddha padmasana you can do it every practice ( yes I know, you don't normally jump out of badha konasana but I wanted to link the lotus jump through with the lotus jump back, indulge me).
I was wondering yesterday, those Anasura yogi's, they seem to be having a lot of fun with their asana. Do you think it's because they already have all the chanting, pranayama, meditation and scriptural study as part of their everyday practice, allowing them to feel comfortable playing with their asana. Vinyasa Krama too, the asana is for health and prep, along with the pranayama, for meditation, feel less guilty about having fun with it.
In ashtanga, do we tend to take our asana too seriously? Does it have to be tapas ALL the time?
Just a thought.

Hi Grimm,
I know it's not listed, but do they come in magenta micro-skimpy? If so, I'll take some please. Need all the help I can get in Bakasana B...
Welcome to the world of tiny shorts, Grimm. Now....you're a real yogi!!!
Tee Hee.
warmest regards,
KateR
That last bit made me laugh (esp the color choice). Not an easy thing here in rainy Chicago at 5am, about to teach two-in-a-row. Puce is one of the best words, ever. THANK YOU!
Available in Black, Teal and Puce, with yoga mats from ManPukea to match? Oh yes, we still remember the pink yoga mat incident...
Will see what I can do about the magenta, Kate, will talk to my supplier. re your Bakasana, do you have a crossed or straight leg jump through, if crossed try stealing that high jump through of Kino's, take it a little higher each week till you have pretty much a half handstand, worked for me ...until I discovered the shorts.
Lot a of rain here too CK, got absolutely drenched the other lunch break. Glad it amused.
Manduka came through, sending me my favourite grey one. Hate to admit it but that 'pink' one has grown on me, doesn't look half bad in the half light.
trust me, Anusara doesn't involve that much chanting, pranayama, scripture etc. in a normal class. The Immersions go more into these aspects quite deeply and elements of them may be weaved into a class, but by and large a normal class will take a fun uplifting vinyasa flow approach.
The thing it really focuses on is the 'principles of alignment', which in my view work quite well. Have tweaked almost every major part of my body at some point or another in Mysore but don't recall ever coming out of an Anusara class injured. (Note: this may also be case of me pushing too hard without someone reining me in though...)
It does also tend to build quite a nice community of like minded souls, which also helps with the playful aspect of the practice.
I did wonder how they would have managed to squeeze all those elements into a single class.
Man, wrote a comment on here, guess my galaxy tab decided it wasn't worthy of publishing. Cant' remember what said now, something along the lines of am gonna get me some shorts....that MUST be what is missing from my bakasna landings. Also, a question, I can float up..ish, hold it there a while, at times, but cannot land with the same control. Same with everything with me, used to rock climb, loved going up, absolutely hated absailing back down.....hmm oh yeah, so the down keeping with the inhale or on an exhale? Have been conditioned by jump throughs to exhale.....but could be losing the control...anythoughts?
Also, ashtanga could be called yoga for busy people, all there, wham! two hours bit of everything. Oh and your recent post loved it. Some sports are very yogic, climbing (outside), surfing, intense concetraion and breath control....perhaps that's why there are so many surfing and climbing yogis....just a thought...
Hate it when you lose a comment, especially the long ones. Thanks for having another go.
Re coming down in bakasana. Try this now, breath in deeply five seconds, hold it twenty seconds or ten /fifteen as many as you can. Now exhale as slow as possible over ten seconds say. Like pranayama. Now you probably want to exhale more quickly right but constrict your throat like in ujaii and slow it right down, mouth closed loud slow breath like darth vader.
Now at the same time as your exhaling engage your mula and uddiyana bandahs creating that lift.
That;s basically what I'm doing when i come down into bakasana or any of these fancy arm balances. I inhale as i float up hold it a moment and then slow my exhale right down, loud constricted but forceful ujaii while engaging the bandhas, that's how I control the descent. Think it's a bit Swensonish
re climbing and surfing, I kind of agree about them but in their guise as not being sports, i know they can be both.
before becoming an obsessive yogi i spent many years as an obsessive climber - still think there's nothing quite as good for getting 'centered' as a hard scary climb. the ultimate way of going in to yourself (guess its that first chakra survival thing...)
strange that you find coming down harder than floating up. i used lowering into things like bakasana/ kukkutasana as the way of getting the feel for floating back up
Hey Kate, an email direct on Cornwall would be nice, I've looked at John and Lucy's site but I'm confused about how regular practice is structured or is it just workshops. email is grimmly2007 and it's a t g o o g l e d o t c o m. or you can find me on FB perhaps, Anthony Grim Hall
