Yoga Bookshelves

I noticed my own shelf is getting a little cramped and starting to spill over. Then I became curious about what's on other people yoga bookshelves, or pile or bedside table. A thought struck me, how about I do a post called yoga bookshelves and people send me a picture of their own bookshelf or perhaps a link to flikr or something. And of course if we see something on somebody's shelf that we're curious about we can ask about it.

This is not a competition to see who has the most yoga books, my own has a lot of random stuff picked up in charity shops that isn't great and that I should probably take back to where I got them from. A small pile of books you love and use a lot is of course worth as much if not more than a bunch of books you'll never pick up again. Don't worry if your books aren't stacked all together neatly, a couple of shots of a couple of piles will be fine too. And of course is can be anonymous, in fact I like that idea, lets do that, anonymous yoga bookshelves.

Be nice if we can get at least ten pictures of bookshelves here to get it started, think once we get ten it'll hopefully take on a life of it's with own other pictures turning up every once in a while as readers stumble across the post.

Good quality pictures if possible so we can zoom in and read the titles. My address is always under 'contact me' which is under 'About me' over on the left but here it is again grimmly2007 and that's a t google dot com

My yoga books are everywhere in the shelf. I know that yogis/yoginis love to travel. Might be that they also like to read. :)

I'm curious.

"A little cramped"? Those shelves are sagging man! Reinforcements are definitely needed, or you can build upwards. My shelves are full of knick knacks I don't need hiding the books behind them. I'll post a table display of my haul soon. Great idea!

What a fantastic idea! I love books, and bookshelves, and would love peeking at others' yoga books, get some ideas. Will send you mine, very modest one, over the weekend when I get back to the farm.

Sounds fun - although I think my yoga bookshelf would be a single shelf! I'll see what I can do ... :)

Ashtanga yoga AND Heiddeger. Intense!

Love this idea! My books are scattered around the house, shall take a photo of the most concentrated area........: ) If only I had more time to sit and read them. sigh..

Either that or we have less time to read now we spend so much of it on the mat Ursula.

They are sagging in the middle, need to cull a little I think , Thanks serene.

Look forward to the pic Bibi, couple of shots have come in and been put up, this could get expensive though already getting amazon itchy.

Thanks Susie, as i said size of the shelf doesn't matter a small pile of books you go to a lot better than a sagging shelf of books you rarely pick up.

It started off as the Heidegger shelf Carl but is being steadily over run. Think they go together well though, see Heidegger as a kind of yogi and as much as I love the gita, upanishads etc in the end you have to come back to finding a similar or equivalent path within your own culture, more organic. This was Heidegger's thinking when he worked on translating the Tao, as much as he loved it he felt the need to turn back to his own tradition. He also said that if he had come across the Tannisho earlier he would have studied Japanese instead of Greek : )

Get a broom エスタ and push them all into one corner, I know you have a good camera.

I should have included the iPad and the ibookshelf or Kindle shelf in the shot.

Thanks for all the pictures so far, looking forward to receiving some more. If you do send me one and you don't notice it being posted then please post a comment, just found a couple in my spam box, almost missed them.

Changed my own picture so it would blow up better enabling a clearer view of the titles. I'm going to have a link to this post on the sidebar in the hope people will keep adding so anyone ever want to change their picture for a better quality or just because they've had a blitz on Amazon let me know.

Noticed meditation s from the at popping up a couple of times must have a look at that one. What's with the huge version of the hath a yoga paprika (mac's predictive text changed that and it amused me so much I decided to leave it in) how do they manage to stretch that little book so far?

'Awakening the Spine' I've wanted for a long time, never get around to buying it, really should although I do have 'Yoga and You' by Esther Myers, long time student of Vanda Scaravelli which was interesting, should pick it up again.

Curious about the title 'The sound of paper' and want to see if there's a LOOK INSIDE for 'See how Yoga feels' on Amazon if only because i love the cover.
Thank you everybody for sending them in.

Love love the idea too, whenever window of opportunity with my energy opens....

Is a nice idea huh, already got a few pictures in resulting in a couple of visits to Amazon. Hoping a year from now we might have quite a few. You must have visited a few yoga friends houses/flats, bet you shuffle over to their yoga bookshelf first chance you get, know I would.
Looking forward to one from you Claudia but no rush, don't want you lugging books around at the moment....now James of course....
Hope your back to 100% soon, looks like your able to concentrate and stare at a screen for longer now, just saw your longgggggggg 32 point post on yoga therapy, will read it at the weekend.

I hope this is not advertising! but if you go to the link above and click on Contents, it gives you a glimpse of the book See How Yoga Feels. I really like the book. Textbook sometimes send me to sleep, so I need something in simple language.

Also love How Yoga Works (basically a delightful story based on Yoga Sutra). Meditations from the mat, a Xmas pressie, is also one of my fav.. again, simple language re paths of yoga.

I have been thinking of getting some yoga anatomy books though....

I'm waiting for someone to bust out some old dusty scrolls.

Grimmly said...

Thanks for the link HD, links to view books, always acceptable, looks fun. Human anatomy books, coulter's hatha yoga anatomy is a good reference but might send you to sleep, Kaminoff's Yoga anatomy is Ok I guess but limited. The huge DK The Human Body is nice, a good substitute to having a Skeleton in your closet, in fact there's an iPad app now, just downloaded it, review to come. then there'a that guy who's done a series of books, forget his name, kept spamming me, look good though.
Thanks for the pic.

MG, i'm hoping Sharath will send me one of his bookshelf with a tatty half eaten copy of the Yoga Korunta sticking out from behind his Bikram.

half of my books are in storage in San Francisco.

Grimmly said...

A photo pf the other half would do fine Arturo, an expat yoga shelf....or you can owe me one : ) That was a good day, coming back from Japan and opening a dozen boxes of stored books, all kinds of things I'd forgotten about.

I took the photo and as you can see not many yoga books. Then I noticed the other books in the frame and wondered what that said about me. Then I looked again at your photo with the same thought. Interesting person Mr Grimley :)

Grimmly said...

Thanks for the picture Mike. I changed mine with the other books so I could get a better blow up of the yoga titles. kind of wish I hadn't narrowed it down now, love the idea of seeing where everyones yoga books live among their other books.
Been looking at some of yours, the Aphorisms of yoga has an intro by Yeats of all people, sadly there's no LOOK INSIDE on the amazon page, may have to by it just to see what Yeats had to say about yoga.

Thanks again.

thanks for starting this project! This is a lot of fun. It's really interesting to see that there's some overlap on all of our shelves.

Well - digressing to other books on the shelves - whoever's No. 11 is - I used to have that 'Creating Killer Websites' book! No idea where it has ended up but I remember really liking it. As far as I know he was the person who invented using table layouts for websites - which was such a wonerful idea way back then! And that we (web developers) all stand back in horror from nowadays!!! Very amusing ... :)

Grim, what a great idea for a post!! I love looking at other people's book shelves, it's one of my favorite vices, I'm so nosy. I posted some pictures of my collection on my own blog, feel free to rip the photos for your post if you like, although I'm late to the party... :)

Your welcome Ro and thank you again. Noticed that a few of you have put up your own post on this so have added some links, hope that's OK.

Isn't it GREAT maya, love this post, thank you for yours, have posted it and added a link to your post. Fashionably late. Am just about to try and get some Kindle samples of a few of yours.

Though loving this post it may turn out to be expensive.

Does that library include a copy of 'Dancing the Body of Light' by Dona Hollerman? I think you'd like her approach.

StEvE said...

Heck, I just googled it to make sure it was still in print (I bought it about 8 years ago), and it's 70 GBP these days. Maybe it's not essential reading!

Another hidden gem is 'Pranayama' by Andre van Lysebeth. If anything is going to help make the breath sacred, this book does. Excellent explanations of technique & rationale.

Grimmly said...

Hey Steve, No not yet it doesn't but have checked it out since getting your comments, looks interesting, but yeah, expensive. Will be looking out for a copy. The coauthor has a book on the vayu's got a sample for kindle. thanks for the heads up.

Grimmly said...

I have one book by Van Lysebeth, for some reason he irritates me but I've heard about his pranayama book, from claudia possibly. Kind of happy with the pranayama Ramaswami taught me at the moment.

Just added another bookshelf picture ( that makes sixteen now ) Seems though there was trouble sending it to me and I've found a couple that have arrived in my spam box. Do let me know if your having trouble sending me a picture or if you've sent one already but don't see it here.

How you thought about getting yoga books on kindle? It would be great for travel. However, the only problem with books on kindle is that there is no color.

-Matt

Grimmly said...

Mat those first two pictures are from my iPad. first picture is of ibooks the second of kindle for iPad. It's excellent, type in something your interested in, add pdf to the search and it'll probably bring up a text you can open and save in ibooks for free.

I showed this post to a colleague at work a few weeks ago, and guess what, I received the Kaminoff's Yoga Anatomy as pressie today!

Birthday present HD ? I ordered the hathayogapadipka, the big thick Swami Muktibodhananda one that everyone seems to have, still can't see how he can turn that little book into War and peace, should arrive in a couple of days.

HD said...

No, not birthday.. was my last day at work yesterday. The girls at work know how much I love yoga, although only managed to convince one of them to try it out.

I would quite like to get 'Asana, Pranayama, Mudra and Bandha' and a book on yoga sutra, but that might have to wait, still going through some of the books I have.

Shame the local bookstore is not well stocked on yoga books.
