So every spare minute I'm working on the subroutines version of my Vinyasa Karma Practice Book (half done, hopefully finished end of the weekend), irony is my practice this week is almost totally Ashtanga, Primary series.
After a couple of weeks of the VK Supine sequence I wanted to work on the Asymmetric and Seated sequences, twists in particular, which is pretty much Primary. Plus it's getting colder, Primary generates more heat just what I need for out of practice marchi D, Supta Kurmasana and Kukkutasana.
But then I guess I'm working at a subroutine level in Primary so it's all good.
...to practice.
LATER
Finished practice ( Ashtanga Primary) then decided to film it so I could do a break down in the book and show how Primary is made up of a bunch of VK subroutines. Ppracticed a second time at full speed with the camera running but trying to get as deep into the postures as I could for when I took screen shots. Found at the end that I'd pressed OFF for the third part rather than RECORD ( camera has a 15 min video limit ) so had to do that again.
Two and a half practices this morning and it turned out that I had a lousy angle and was cutting off part of my head or foot, need to do it all over again.
Might try and get M to do a photo shoot of the Primary postures, much easier that way, might be fun too.

Hey thanks for creating/sharing the VK practice book. I wanted to do some VK in the evenings how many breaths you hold the postures for are there any specific vinyasas interms of moving between postures. It would be helpful if you can shed some light on basics for beginning VK
Thanks.
Surya.
If you ever get reincarnated as a Mr Man, you'll definitely be Mr Muddle.
I guess you could always become a seasonal yogi, migrating to Ashtanga every Winter. Totally understandable with UK weather.
Hi Surya. Thanks for your comment.
When I made the book I was thinking of it as a companion to Ramaswami's book which has all the details of breath etc.
A few people have asked about this though so this weekend, perhaps the middle of next week I hope to have a new edition of the book which will include practice notes as well as all the individual subroutines in a separate section with links to videos.
here's a link to my page with ALL the videos on

At the top of this blog I have a page called " How to practice VK' but this blog post has a clearer shorter bullet point format
http://vinyasayogaathome.blogspot.com/2011/07/how-to-practice-vinyasa-krama-yoga-in.html
Very briefly. You might repeat a posture two or three times on the breath and/or stay in a posture 2-6 breaths making the breaths long and smooth. VK is VERY flexible, leave out postures you don't feel ready for, some of the more challenging postures stay for less breaths than those you feel more comfortable with.
I have another blog that is JUST vinyasa karma

Thanks again.
Nah, not so muddled really Steve, just seems that way here in black and white. I just get on and do it, whatever it is every morning and then mull it over later here, just thinking out loud. Love aspects of Ashtanga practice but everything else around it winds me up, I'm best out of it so I don't upset anyone else. Think I would have to live in Alaska in the middle of nowhere and without any internet connection to be at peace with Ashtanga.
Besides, my Ashtanga is never really ashtanga anymore and my VK so influenced by the Ashtanga I started with that I just have to put up with the fact that it's a blend of the two and make the best of it.
Did think about winter Ashtanga, rest of the year VK but then that would muddle my head.
Need to do a post on the warm-you-up
VK subroutines
Oh nooooooo. I would agree with asking M for some help !! Ouch!!
As per the ashtanga part in the winter I'm with Steve, it's ok....it's cold...
thanks for the vinyasa krama yoga information, as for myself the series help with mastering Ashtanga poses that challenge me.
M's up for it Claudia, Primary photo shoot, should be fun.
Thanks Quentin, according to Manju, his father used to give him alternative when he was struggling with a posture, came across that in an interview with him.
