'...a celebration of a personal home practice', that's how I choose to read it anyway.

Oh, so this is what all the fuss is about, never ceases to amaze me how het up yogi's get.

I like it, getting out of bed and doing your practice while your partner sleeps, lost count of the hotel rooms I've done that in on holidays while M. has slept. I see it as a celebration of  personal home practice, sneaking one in.

As for the video being sexy, aren't we all just checking out her moves (what's that she's doing 55 seconds in after bakasana hmmm), how she shifts her balance, at which point she begins to lower or lift up, checking out her breathing, how she spreads her fingers... Clearly she's practiced long and hard with discipline, commitment and an obvious sincerity and love of her asana practice.

What's it supposed to be selling, a gym? What does she need a gym for when she can practice like this at home?

Don't wear much in the home shala when I practice either.

It's a text read it as we will, bring to it what you will, I'm a home Ashtangai, that's how I prefer to read it.

What? Oh, he's just pretending to be asleep.... I just thought she had a better camera than me....seven of them.

Seems her name is Briohny Smyth, here's some more of her inversions, love the drop to the forearm.

...and a pressing to handstand tutorial that I can't watch at the moment as I'm in the library but want to check out later.

UPDATE: this is just too well done not to be included, reminds me very much of when I first started.

Oh dear, how cheesy, selling gym membership on an immaculate practice and a bra & panties. 'Equinox' failed to say that you probably need to buy their 25 year pass, and practice everyday.

Sexy? Well, I noticed the YouTube view count was 1.4 million in three weeks. ........ 1.398 pop-bellied New Yorkers' chanting "corrrrr", plus you and I Tony. "Om"

;o)

Typo: 1,398 should be 1,399,998 (but you knew that already ...)

I love her video and she has an amazing practice but I have to disagree with you about liking getting up early, I HATE it

Her body his lovely, her asanas are lovely, but this video gives me a rotten feeling. I too have done practice while a lover is sleeping close by, many times, but everything about this presentation feels leering and contrived.

1.4 million, are you serious, that's insane, wonder what the demographic really is for that, who it's really appealing too, wouldn't be suprised to find that your wrong about the corrrr chanters. Cirque du Soleil is pretty popular I believe and not for the skimpy costumes so much as for the,as you say, immaculate practice. Or perhaps that's just what I choose to believe or hope.

Personally Flutter I'd like to see her staying in postures longer, and some nice pranayama but hey, sometimes it's nice to float around a bit, quite joyous to practice like this occasionally.

Hi Megan, I don't see it as 'leery' though I can see why it could be intepreted that way. 'Her body is lovely', really? I don't know what that means, lovely(?) she's fit, strong, flexible, excellent control and focus...why do we have to bring lovely into it I just see shapes and movement, asana and I know what it takes to make that kind of asana look that effortless. Not how I choose to practice these days but I can still appreciate it.

I just liked it as a home practice video, getting up while the 'other' sleeps and getting on with 'your' practice.

Yeah, I really liked it too, thought it was very peaceful and focused, showing a strong lady do her thing ;) One clip so many interpretations.

By "lovely," I mean that there is an aesthetic quality to her that I find pleasing to look at, but that isn't the issue. Come now, Grimm. I know you're a proper Englishman, but you don't see the sex?

No, I honestly don't, it's yoga, kind of the polar opposite. Don't think she's trying to be sexy either, she's just focussed on her practiceand trying to land her kukkutasana.

I don't think the yogini was 'trying to be sexy' but the camera definitely was. After watching this, I felt creeped out, so I gave it another look to figure out why. There are a *lot* of gratuitous crotch and boob shots in this video, must more than necessary and definitely not there to 'showcase' the poses. She has a great practice, her clothing is not at issue, but the presentation sexualised this video to me.

As you say エスタ 'one clip so many interpretations' or readings. I did a quick straw poll in my workshop, one "corrrrrr" one "it could be taken either way" and a " I don't find it particularly sexual" the last from the girl I work with.

Anyway...I just liked the home practice angle. Thanks for the comments and different perspectives everyone.

I am always intrigued how adverts like this cause such a stir in the yoga community. I think the key is to see them for what they are – adverts. There whole point is to grab people's attention. Increasingly advertising companies are jumping on the yoga bandwagon to sell stuff (take a look at a recent edition of Yoga Journal for the evidence).
There is another perspective to this which is if this video inspires someone to take up yoga has it not done some good?

"One clip so many interpretations" - spot on. I didn't find the clip offensive at all although I can see how it can be perceived that way. I think it's a really nice piece of art - the video and the practice and the human form!

Has anyone checked out the link she mentions in the handstand instruction video? I just looked at http://yogisanonymous.com/live.php
and it seems to offer live FREE online classes. Sounds interesting...

Nice point dassocmed , Krishnamacharya, Jois they all did their demos to get people interested, the pictur of Jois I posted showing him the picture of health and fitness, a new India.

I liked it too D. I've served my social, fem, lit, psych crit time, coud pick it apart if I chose, preferred to appreciate her practice or at least the practice we don't see that allows her to pull off the fancy stuff so well.

We bring to it what we take from it.

That said I understand why some get so het up about it but also why some just appreciate it.

I posted it because I saw she was taking a lot of flak and wanted to say hey I like this, like your practice and love the practice while he sleeps angle.

Haven't checked out that link you chick but have looked at a couple of her other YouTube vids, like that press to handstand tutorial with the towel, it's hard, I tried it but seems to work.

Cameras used

I've been asked which camera I use for the pictures and videos on this blog.

This year, 2011,
I'm using the SamsungWB210
from 2008-2009
Panasonic Lumix DCMFX-500

Both have a mega wide angle lens, ideal for getting the whole of a posture in a shot and while filming in a small room in lowish light.
I tend to film the vinyasa with the video function and then take screenshots.
I edit with Quicktime pro on my imac, compressing with the export for web feature to post on YouTube
