Hey NYT, my body was pretty much wrecked....

RESPONSE

The curious thing was that I hadn't really noticed that I had got so out of shape, so unhealthy, find it quite shocking looking back at these old photos...how could I not know? There were signs, the kidney stones, the gall bladder operation. When they took my gall bladder out they were supposedly shocked by the amount of cholesterol (this was in Japan). I was wearing smart designer suits back then, thought I looked sharp enough.

That's the scary thing I'm guessing the majority of overweight and unhealthy middle aged men think they're pretty much OK, could do with losing a few pounds perhaps but on the whole think they're fine and don't realize how much they've let their health slip or how much work it will take to turn it around and that it will get harder each year, they need to start now, today not wait for the next New Year Resolution..

I got into yoga almost by accident but it became a passion. As so often with yoga I changed other areas  of my life to fit in with the practice, ate less, pretty much cut out drinking, eventually went veggie. I wasn't trying to be fit or healthy, I just wanted to practice yoga more comfortably.

There needs to be a government campaign one of those awareness raising ads that says, hang on a minute, you don't just need to lose the odd couple of pounds you need to rethink how your living your life and it's important because people are dying from this.

That’s the article I’d like to see from the New York Times magazine.

Hahaha!!!!! Nice one. It really is time for that stupid article to just go away.

bugger, thanks Susan. took me long enough to get around to reading it.

Just remembered that that picture was taken by M as I was laying in bed, hardly able to move, after putting my back out at the golfing range the night before. I was waving in the picture for her aunts as I wasn't able to get up for the planned lunch that day.

You could write a short article and send it to the NYT...

I doubt they would print it Susan , perhaps if i titled it... Yoga, turned me into a newt.

Thanks Doug.

Of course Flutter much lighter and fitter and not just physically, mentally too. oops, bit of a rant.

Good rant! I love it when I agree with you LOL :-))

So true, people absolutely don't realise what dire shape they're in or that they need to take responsibility for it.

I always think of a former student who was told by his doctor he needed spinal surgery. He only came to try yoga as a last resort. He came to classes 1-2x a week, and I gave him a 5-10 minute routine to do in the mornings - stuff like janu sirsasana A. In a month or two his pain was completely gone.

The NYT with its irresponsible reporting is going to be responsible for a lot of unnecessary surgeries and people continuing to live in chronic pain, IMO.

yeah, dunno what happened there came over all impassioned.

Yes love it when we agree too, lets do pizza quick before we fight again.

It's funny how yoga changes you without you planning the changes. I hate to admit it but when I first started practicing yoga 15 or so years ago I would leave the Buddhist centre and have a cigarette.

Excellent perspective, agree wholeheartedly!!!!

I had no idea you had had such an operation, and I can imagine the people in Japan, who tend to be so in shape... wonder if what they saw was influenced by their culture of eating mostly rice and fish (I think, but could be wrong) that was talking through them, meaning, wonder if in America doctors would have been shocked too...

Love this response to that silly article, it is so true that many people do not see what is happening to the body or think it is all OK when it really is not...

You are a great inspiration Grimmly

Oh, and sweet that M likes the picture because it is more smoochie-like (I know, my wording!)

Love that you had a ciggie outside the buddhist centre flutter, giggled at that.
Thanks Anon.
I think American doctors would probably be more irritated than surprised Claudia, sure they see a too much of it.

Cameras used

I've been asked which camera I use for the pictures and videos on this blog.

This year, 2011,
I'm using the SamsungWB210
from 2008-2009
Panasonic Lumix DCMFX-500

Both have a mega wide angle lens, ideal for getting the whole of a posture in a shot and while filming in a small room in lowish light.
I tend to film the vinyasa with the video function and then take screenshots.
I edit with Quicktime pro on my imac, compressing with the export for web feature to post on YouTube
