Fantastic. I have booked a place on a Mysore practice and workshop with Manju next July - first time in any Ashtanga workshop. Should be good, hopefully I get a place.
I recently heard that bikram is making a lecture appearance in a few months in Ireland and I know not many ashtangis out there should care too much, but part of me is interested in what the brand that is bikram, the Vegas millionaire who doesn't seem to worry too much about Yamas and Niyamas has to say- is that wrong? Is it worth €37? Hmmmmmmm
Yes, liked this but different from how Ramaswami taught me but good to see the slightly different approaches to pranayama. There's another video of Maju doing it on Youtube, this time in colour, very intense, tried it but prefer the gentler approach i was given.
Always felt I'd like to try a Bikram room at least once although i find an Ashtanga shala hot let alone a Bikram room.
A least you'll get to see for yourself what he's like rather than how everyone else portrays him, bound to be entertaining at least.
I went to a couple of bikram classes a few years back and Even though the practice itself was good, I found the teachers very close to unbearable with their army-style approach and the egos - my god the egos.
I'm definitely an ashtangi, but the curious side of me always wants to know what makes bikram tick, is it making a healthier and longer-living society like he he claims, or is it much simpler than that - money?
I loved Sharath's conference on Dec 18th when he mentioned how the work we put into our practice generates more internal heat - not like Bikram. Brilliant.
This is purely my opinion (so potentially worthless), but I find that a stronger pranayama sits very nicely when tacked on the end of a 1.5 hour vinyasa practice, whereas the lighter long, slow flow rates are nice in the evening, just prior to dinner for example. As you say, they are both very different, but both very good.
It's also nice to introduce a 2:1 ratio (exhale twice as long as the inhale). It really helps lengthen your exhale and 'get down in the basement'.
I tend to avoid mentioning Bikram Anon, whatever the secondhand impression I have of him personally is tempered by some of the Bikram blogs I've come across, written by students and teachers who seem as sincere and genuine concerning their practice as anyone else. I feel more and more it comes down to how we approach our practice whatever the style from gym to Ashtanga. Be good to see him first hand.
I tend to do my pranayama after my morning Vinyasa Krama practice never enjoyed it after Ashtanga all sweaty and horribly. Am considering changing into something fresh inc. new towel etc for Finishing, as if being shifted to the changing room to finish in mysore and then try pranayama. never really got on with doing it before hand as Tim Miller does.
tried practicing along with that other maju pranayama video, very intense, again not what i'm used to, guess we tend to stick with how we were taught and became comfortable with.
I tend to practice 5 sec inhale, 20 second hold (allows for the mantra), ten second exhale, ten second hold with bandhas).
