Tucking the tailbone in Salabhasana and Mayurasana

Filmed most of 2nd series yesterday to try get a benchmark now I've come back to the series. Overall it was a pretty scrappy affair, grazed my heels on the second kapo so that's coming back and I at least got my lotus back up in karanda. leg behind head is nowhere near as deep as it used to be, did I really practice kapilasana.

Oh well., It'll come back.

I've been playing with tucking the tailbone, trying it everywhere to see if it makes a difference...even tried it on karandavasana (nah, not so much or at least didn't notice it this time around although perhaps just perhaps it accounts for the more control coming down).

You may remember I got the tucking the tailbone focus back after watching Heather Morton's  back bending DVD (link is to my post) and it did make quite a difference to my backbends.

But from Salabhasana to dhanarasana there's a marked improvement. now this might not be news, depending on which shala you happen to go to, tucking the tailbone may well be your asana teacher's 'thing'. I'm sure I've read about it heard about it, probably did it for a wile but it must have dropped off and got forgotten along with a million other things we try here and there as we build up all the different elements that make up an asana.

So here's my Salabhasana, I tried to show the difference here, so as I lift I'm doing it without tucking the tailbone and then when you see the extra lift and control, well that's when the tailbone is well and truly tucked.



And here it is on Mayurasana.



The vinyasas in and out of these postures are probably all wrong. As I said only just come back to this series and haven't practiced along with one of the DVD's to get the count etc back but perhaps it gives an idea of the tailbone tuck effect.

Any was quite a WOW moment during practice and again when watching the video back so thought I'd share it.

Talking of 2nd, time to go and practice it, don't start work 'till 11am today then it's back to normal, 2nd series at 5, groan.

I've been really giving the tailbone some key-focus too since you pointed me at Heather's dvd. It's really proving fruitful in unexpected areas i.e. rocking in Garbha Pindasana is much improved, and a bunch of other stuff.

In garbha P too, interesting. Been trying it everywhere posting a Kapo one now. Thanks re Salabhasana was quite a surprise watching the video back and seeing how much of a difference it makes, good for upward facing dog too and really getting the hips down into the mat which is good backbend prep. Have you tried it on Pasassana to see if helps there, more stability perhaps.

Mate, I have tried everything barre hiring a winch in Pasasana but got the go-ahead for Krounchasana last year, so I'm trying an 'unattachment' approach of late and carrying on regardless. Year-on-year it's getting better though. I was not in good shape as a youngster, and had a bad road accident in my early 30's so, I'm running on faith, that primary is working away in the background, doing all necessary repairs.

Most of the poses you post about are way beyond where I am, but interested to read that tucking the tailbone was good in upward facing dog. Must try that - I remember Dena saying that was the first backbend in the series, and having glimpsed my efforts in a mirror I can see that my back does not appear to be bending!!

Want to have a look at tucking the tailbone in during primary Friday Susie, Heather seems to be talking about it in the sense of forward bends too which is interesting. yes, Upward dog is a hell of a backbend, there are all those versions of it in Vinyasa Krama Bow series, Bhujangasana, Think it's David Williams who has his students satay in it for five breaths every time.
