Freemanology - A Richard Freeman day plus Kino books, Maya's books also

Day off today and I'm planning on brushing up on some Freemanology (I'm attending his five day workshop at the end of August).

Confession time, forgive me father for I have sinned, it's been three weeks since my last full Ashtanga practice (hang on, there WAS that Primary and 2nd on the morning of my birthday but apart from that).

Actually, I think I still AM practicing Ashtanga (Vinyasa Krama too) but not ashtanga ashtanga if you know what I mean.

...not traditional ashatanga...actually, again, I happen to think what I'm practicing IS traditional Ashtanga, the limbs integrated, the asana flexible, groups of asana, no fixed sequence, creative, adaptable.... but not of the more... recent tradition perhaps,

But then what's tradition anyway, supposedly something handed down twice within three generations....but then that's not the traditional interpretation of tradition, that idea of tradition is only about two hundred years old itself, traditionally tradition meant, old, even ancient practices handed down over generations.

One of the things I liked about Ramaswami on his TT course is that I don't remember him talking that much about  tradition in relation to asana, about what was right or wrong, correct or incorrect method (rarely, only where it could involve injury), rather he would tend say, "...this is how my teacher taught me", and invite you to try it that way (of course his teacher was Krishnamachara but still).

Liked that a lot.

Something I do like though about Krishnamacharya's Yoga Makaranda and Yogasangalu is that they're grounded in the shastras, those ancient texts, we can see where this practice comes from, the important elements anyway (the ancient idea of tradition). And then on top of all that important stuff we have his approach to asana, no doubt as taught to him by his teacher and adapted/internalised by him, linking breath to movement while in as well as entering and exiting the asana ( the recent tradition idea perhaps).

My current morning's practice is a Krishnamacharya approach where the inversions are shifted to the beginning of the practice, outlined HERE

Evening's are a more Yoga Makaranda / Yogasanagalu approach, close to primary and 2nd series but less fixed sequences, less postures to allow for longer stays.

This morning however .....late start as I wait for my back to de creak, this Osteoarthritis, bit of a bugger, good days, bad days or rather bad days and less bad days, must be something to do with how I'm sleeping, oh well the yoga is supposed to be good for it.

Get stuck into some more of the Aranya commentary on the Yoga Sutras during the afternoon or more likely get caught up in Olympic tiddywinks, where we're expecting our first gold in four years

In the evening, revisit Richard's Second Series DVD, followed by part six of the pranayama course.

I was asked about the course and I haven't reviewed it yet. It's difficult, you get stuck in your own approach to pranayama and trying another approach gets ....frustrating. Lots of good things in the course though, as you'd expect, many of which I've incorporated in my own practice. M. a pranayama beginner found the first session confusing, confused by Kidney Wings etc, the Richardisms I'm familiar with from his DVD's, needed to keep stopping the video to explain. In the end we gave up and I taught her the same exercises in my own way. For me with a couple of years of practice it took 'till the fifth episode to really take off, although, as I indicated, lots of good things right from the start of the course and in each session that I've incorporated in my own pranayama practice and that have echoed with my approach to asana also.

The idea of the course is six online live pranayama sessions. At the end your able to email in questions that then get passed on to Richard who answers them. The sessions can be downloaded a couple of days later.

Richard is fascinating, love how he's brought all these elements into  his approach to Ashtanga, my plan is to bring what I'm calling Freemanology, all  that internal focus into my Vinyasa Krama.

Now That's who I'd like to read a biography by or Tim Miller, he's actually working on one called 'Dust', Nancy, David Swenson, David Willams, people who have been practicing for forty years or more, their relationship to their practice over the years and in a western context.

Kino has brought a 'memoir' out, Sacred Fire,  seems a little soon but then I can't talk, here's a link to a review

I'm more curious about her Ashtanga book which seems to be coming out April 2013, 240 pages, a nice size room to cram a lot in, should be good, especially if your just starting out.

I caught the first one, Conjouring Raine as a podcast and enjoyed it a lot, listened at work checking a hundred saxophones for a large order, got me through sanity intact, thank you again Maya

The second one, Toby Streams the Universe, I think I enjoyed even more, one of the sub characters is even an Ashtangi, made me think of siddhis, those strange yogic powers and how to cope with them. read it in the bath on the iPad...too much information?

Just started the new one, Children of the fallen, there's this one character, Dusi, I want to tell you about but don't want to spoil it, enough to say I'd love to see this character on a movie screen

If your into writing yourself, lots of posts scattered around Maya's blog on the process as well as on getting your work out there, and coffee, lots on coffee oh and the best reviews whether it be Ashtanga books, movies, tv series.... oh and she lives in a Yurt and just bought a school bus.

Kareem Abdul-Jabar, Yoga and Bruce lee

Just came across this photo of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar via DAMNGOODYOGA on fb via the Asheville Yoga Center's archive the basketball center and Sri K Pattabhi Jois, seems karim used to practice yoga.

Here he is talking about yoga in an article in Mens Health

"There is no way I could have played as long as I did without yoga," says Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, not retired after an extraordinary 20 years in pro basketball. Many consider Abdul-Jabbar to be the greatest center, maybe the greatest player, in basketball history. "My friends and teammates think I made a deal with the devil. But it was yoga that made my training complete," he says.

Abdul-Jabbar first discovered yoga in 191 when he was a nearly 7foot tall 14-year old high school student named Lew Alcindor. He came across a book on the subject and immediately saw how this Eastern discipline's emphasis on suppleness, concentration and breathing rather than sheer physical strength could benefit him. Particularly the breathing: "Basketball is an endurance sport, and you have to learn to control your breath," he says. "That's the essence of yoga, too. So I consciously began to  use yoga techniques in my practice and playing."

When he got to UCLA, Abdul-Jabbar read more books as his interest in yoga grew. By 1978 he was routinely employing yoga exercises as part of his training program. Since 1984 he's studied with Bikram Choudhury--the "Yogi to the Stars" and a former amateur world weight-lifting champion--at the Yoga College of Beverly Hills.

Abdul-Jabbar is unequivocal about the contributions yoga made to his longevity. "As preventative medicine, it's unequaled," he says. "Once I started practicing it, I had no muscle injuries during my career. Yoga can help any athlete with hip joints, muscles, tendons, and knees. Plus it keeps you in touch with your body."

Re posting this now as a reminder that I have this upcoming workshop with Richard Freeman, booked back in April, coming up at the end of next month. Need to brush up my Ashtanga in my evening practice slot (been working on Krishnamacharya's approach in Yoga makaranda and yogasanagalu recently).

I've also been following along with Richard's online Pranayama course which finished last week. Good time to practice along with his DVD's to try and bring the two together, so much crossover between how he approaches his asana and teaches pranayama.

Just booked my first Yoga workshop ever (from 10th April).

It was a toss up between Manju in Crete, Nancy's upcoming workshop, Richard and a late runner, Mysore in July.

Just happened that I came across the Richard Freeman intensive while going through a Richard Freeman, Kidney wings, Cobra hoodie, seat of Patanajali phase and want to carry on exploring that rather than disrupting it with anything else right now

Having the best practice this month ( See Yesterday's post) thanks to the one workshop he did at the Ashtanga Yoga Confluence on back bending. The intensive I booked includes that one (which is nice as the sound wasn't great on the video) and four more besides.

Day 1. Square One, Touching Earth
We will play with the subtlety of uddiyana-mula bandha, so that the legs and the feet connect to the earth, and the coccyx and kidneys become the sofa of Patanjali.

Day 2. Curling, coiling and twisting in wave patterns
Breath and body can learn to move with continuous alignment, manifesting in a natural movement into the central axis as prana and apana naturally and organically interpenetrate all through the body.

Day 3. Arm balancing with strength, alignment and focus
Learning how the shoulderblade structurally interfaces with the ribcage, spine and abdomen.

Day 4. Backbending with the Subtle Breath
In all backbending postures, knowledge of subtle actions and counteractions and how to fine tune them can eliminate joint compression and leave you grounded, open and clear.

Day 5. Inversions, Pranayama and Letting Go
The shoulderstand and headstand families of postures are keys and precursors to other forms of contemplative practice. In these postures the palate plays the central role as it opens the central axis of the body.

Just booked the morning session so far, not sure I can afford the second part on the Gita (and not my favourite book, though interesting and beautiful) and besides I have enough of his talks to be going on with for now with  his book, Mirror of Yoga, digesting  his Studio talks too and the  six Yoga Matrix cd's (again something I've had for ages but hardly listened too).

Mysore in July was close, really close, (half filled out the application form before checking the flights), Noble had mentioned that the shala was opening in July and I figured it would be a really quiet time. Flights turned out to be more expensive than I expected and I had to ask myself how interested I actually was in going, turns out, if I'm honest with myself, not so much, more a feeling that I probably should go at some point or other rather than feeling a strong draw to the place.

I've always been more drawn to a month on the trains travelling all over India, doing my practice wherever I find myself than a month in Gokulum doing a practice I do everyday anyway (spent years traveling rough, hopped some trains, long long train journeys, perhaps I want to recapture a little of that).

But then I've had Richard's DVD's for years and only watched them once 'till now so perhaps I'll feel the draw to Mysore in the future.

Taking M. through Primary Series today (she's practiced a little Vinyasa krama thus far) so if she gets the Ashtanga bug perhaps someday we can go to Mysore together.

Postures on a Thread and the Middle Path of Love

We are delighted that, for his 2012 visit, Richard Freeman will once again be exploring not just the multiple subtleties of the Ashtanga Vinyasa system, but also the multiple subtleties of the Bhagavad Gita, a core yoga text with, as Richard says, a Russian doll quality of many layered themes, as relevant today as they were 2000 or so years ago.

For the first time, it will be possible to book just the morning practice sessions or just the afternoon philosophy and discussion sessions – though, of course, we hope that you will be drawn to take the whole 5 days!

The morning sessions Postures on a Thread – Ashtanga Vinyasa Inside Out and Outside Inwill be primarily devoted to an exploration of details of the traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa series to find new awareness in its transitions and new alignment depth in old postures. Mindfulness of the breath will be used to bring the brilliant core of the central axis out through the forms of the postures. Through the continuous joining and separating of masculine and feminine movements in both the breathing patterns and the structures of the postures, an attention to fine detail becomes natural and easy. The morning sessions will be broadly structured as follows:

The afternoon sessions The Bhagavad Gita, the Middle Path of Love will use lecture and discussion to explore:

Day 1. Context and Crisis.
The crisis of a unified value code, the crisis of death, the crisis of knowledge, the crisis of relationship and the crisis of love.

Day 2. Waking up in the middle of a paradoxical pot.
The story within the story of the extended, infinite Mahabharata, the revitalisation of the dharma, and the dilemma of Arjuna. What is the effect of the layers of narration, the frames in frames? What is between the armies? Compassion?

Day 3. Nirodha is not what you think.
It is not negative. The field of citta accounts for content, structure and belief of and about experience, including sacred forms.

Day 4. The atman in the atman.
The various philosophies of Sankhya, Karma, Yajna, Jnana and Yoga form the Russian nesting doll quality of themes in the Gita, as atman is within atman within atman. The vision of “Seeing Me within all beings and all beings within Me” is a pattern that runs all the way into the two mirror metaphor of lover and beloved being each others’ heart.

Day 5. The Gita as a universal text like the Yoga Sutra.
The plurality of paths is essential, unavoidable and is at the heart of the insight of the Gita. Even the worship of various gods is all part of a meandering path to Krishna, also various philosophies and concepts of Krishna are a meandering transformation to Krishna. Does the Gita make any explicit reference to self-reference paradox? A new interpretation of the Gita is always needed. We never stand on the same ground in the same circumstances. There is no final interpretation, but what interpretation there is must be new, less dogmatic, more open.

Richard Freeman is one of the world’s leading teachers of Astanga Vinyasa yoga. He began the practice of yoga asana and meditation in 1968 and subsequently found an integrative vision in the teachings of the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Richard’s teaching style is unique in that it continuously restructures and reframes the biomechanical and perceptual forms of the asanas and movements in the context of a profound understanding of yoga philosophy, all laden with humour and compassion. Richard spent nearly nine years in Asia studying various traditions which he incorporates into the Astanga yoga practice.

Open to teachers, trainee teachers and experienced practitioners of all traditions. Some experience of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga is desirable for those attending the morning sessions.

Great news, seems we wont have to wait  as long as feared for Gregor's meditation book. I'm currently nearing the end of my first reading of his one on Pranayama, review to come. 

I'd have finished it sooner but he provides all these references to texts I can't help but chase down and then there are the exercises and all these things you want to try out.....

Down below is Gregor's FB status update from this morning on how the body and practice changes as one gets older.

This isn't just a question of physical capability of course, recently I've been drawn more towards extended pranayama and meditation practice causing me to cut back on the asana. However, there's still this nagging voice that keeps whispering in my ear, telling me that I have a few years of good asana in me yet and that I should be making the most of it.

I've been trying to work a post all week about 'letting go', letting go of the fancy asana, of the high level of strength and fitness that comes with a full on advanced asana practice, letting go of the cool kids club.... and just accepting that a strong asana focus is a preparatory stage as far as traditional ashtanga is concerned, pranayama too, sooner or later your likely to want to cut those limbs back a little ( or a lot) to make time for your meditation practice.....may as well be sooner rather than later.

'...When once a fair proficiency has been attains in asana and pranayama, the aspirant to Dhyana has to regulate the time to be spent on each and choose the particular Asanas and pranayama which will have the most effect in strengthening the higher organs and centres of perception and thus aid him in attaining Dhyana.' I completed the 2nd draft of my new meditation book, called Yoga Meditation.
I will now start to here post content.

I got requests from a few students to write about how body and practice changes as one gets older as people seem to struggle to keep up practice. Important here is to realize that asana practice was designed to support practice of meditation and pranayama. As you get older you need to shift emphasis from asana practice to the higher limbs. Try to limit your asana practice to 90 minutes and spend the rest on higher yogic practices.

Physical problems often result from students not graduating on to the higher limbs. It’s the higher limbs that will give you the realization that you are not the body but the consciousness, the self. Once that has been attained the ambition to flog the body in asana practice, will disappear and with it many of the physical problems.
(passage from Yoga Meditation): If asana is understood on a deep level then we will, once in the posture, produce the counteraction that propelled us into the posture. When done on all levels of live this method leads to mastery, that it going with the flow, being in the zone or being in the Tao. Rather than manifesting an enormous force that breaks through the barriers of the world and must in the end produce our own un-doing we move through life without force but using existing forces. This way no counterforce is ever necessary to manifest against us.
This principle is beautifully expressed in Chuang Tzu’s “The Dexterous Butcher”. The story is a bit unsavoury for vegetarians but the message is deep nevertheless. Here, Lord Wen-hui watches and questions his cook who for 19 years uses the same blade to carve up thousands of oxen without sharpening it. The cook explains that rather than hacking through the oxen, he first pays respect in his heart, meets the oxen with his whole consciousness and he cares for the Way. He then moves with great subtlety, finds the right spot, almost effortlessly leans against the oxen and suddenly it is as if the whole oxen falls apart by itself. (end of quote)

Your body is that oxen. Rather than hacking through it with much energy and effort, first pay respect for it in your heart. It is not an animal that you need to conquer and beat into submission. Meet your body with your whole consciousness and treat it as an expression of the Divine creative force (prana). Do not think that you only want to get that backbend, that leg-behind-head or which ever posture it is. Understand that your body is the crystallized history of your past thoughts, emotions and actions. Its not just meat, but more than you think it is.

Move with great subtlety and find the right spots where you are holding on. Because it is you that is holding on, not somebody else. And now comes the secret: After with having identified with great subtlety the right spot, lean against it almost effortless and without ambition, just by shifting your body weight within your body. The result will be that your body will open almost effortless.

Important though is that you do not practice for the results, for the outcome. Do not practice goal-oriented as that will lead to more and more injury. As Lord Krishna says in the Gita, surrender the outcomes of your actions.
I found that it takes many years and decades to open to inner intelligence and intelligence of the body. Good news is that intelligence grows as one gets older. Years ago scientists thought that we get dumber as we get older but this has now been proven wrong. There is something called the neuroplasticity of the brain. It means that as long as you keep learning, your brain will become more and more powerful.

As I am getting older, I found that I am using less and less energy and time to achieve in my practice more and more. Recently I read a sign in a café’ saying, ‘Drink coffee. Do more stupid things, faster and with more energy.’ A was amazed that the sign expressed reciprocally what happened in my practice (without coffee). Using much less energy, I do less things in a smarter way but the outcome is much more profound. But like Lord Wen-hui’s butcher I first had to learn to listen to my body.

The good news is that yoga gets better as it goes on. I found the first 10 years tough. The second decade sort of happened by auto-pilot, meaning it required no additional effort. But only in the third decade the harvest began. Keep hanging in there. It will get better and better.

I had a fantastic time teaching in Manila. Heartfelt thanks to the people of the Philippines, who welcomed me so openly. I found them to be some of the friendliest people that I ever visited. I very much look forward to returning to Manila in the future.

More Krishnamacharyas Yogasanagalu Translation Pages 32-35 Mudras & Kriyas


I am embarassed to say that I don’t have the opportunity to discuss this in detail, but I have discussed this in detail in the 1st section of “Yogamakarnada”.  Therefore, I trust that you will be able to read from there.  Those who have the necessity can learn from respective teachers.  Also, one should learn in the same way the rest of yoganga parts:  pratyahara, dharana, dhyana and samadhi.


You know that some people believe and practice these as parts of yoganga.  However, these are not in Patanjaladarshana which is the basis of all yoga. They are also not described in other texts and Upanishads.  These are described only Hathayogapradipika and Gherunda samhita. However, in Hathayogapradipika, although Swatmarama has said

मेधःश्लेष्ह्माधिकःपर्वं षट्कर्माणि समाचरेत्।
अन्यस्तु नाचरेत् तानि दोषाणां समभावतः॥

Medhah shleshmadhikah parvam shatkarmani samacharet।
Anyastu nacharet tani goshanam samabhavatah ॥

Many people continue to practice it without learning the mystery, endangering themselves and bringing bad reputation to yoga which is very unfortunate.


There are six different types: 1. Dhouti 2. Basti  3. Neti  4. Nauli  5. Trataka and 6. Kapala bhati

1. Dhouti kriya

The first dhouti kriya is further classified into four types: Antardhouti, Dantadhouti, Hruddhouti and Moola shodhana.

Antardhouti:  This is again divided into  four types; Vatasara, Varisara, Vahnisara, and Bahishkruta

Vatasara dhouti: Open your mouth like a crow’s beak and slowly inhale the air then close the mouth and swallow, from this wash your stomatch by moving it all around and then release it from the anus or by exhalation.

By doing this once, it is not possible to release the inhaled air through the anal opening.  By  practicing daily for not less than 25 times for several days, then on the 5th try, the air can be released through the anal opening.

Those who can not accomplish this can do it slowly through rechaka.  This will give medium benefit.  This Vatasara dhouti belongs to Rajayoga.

Benefits:  Eliminates diseases of the heart, purifies blood and increases digestive power.

Varisara dhouti:  Continue drinking clean water (cold or warm) until it comes up to your throat.  Swirl the water in the stomach sideways, up and down, pull the stomach in and push it out and release through the anal opening.  This belongs to laya yoga.  This can be mastered by practicing several times a day.

Benefits:  By removing impurities from skeletal joints and knots within the nervous system, causes the body to shine and increases jatara agni (Raja Yoga).

Vahnisara dhouti: The stomach along with the navel must be pulled in so as to touch the spine and then pushed forward again. Repeat this several times.  While pulling the stomach in, practice rechaka kumbhaka and while pushing the stomach forward, practice puraka kumbhaka.  Practice this before eating.  If you want to practice this after eating, wait for atleast three hours.  Otherwise, it is dangerous.  This vahnisara dhouti must be practiced daily by repeating for 24 times (Raja yoga).

Benefits:  This elimiates all types of stomach ailments

Bahishkruti dhouti:  Form your mouth like a crow’s beak and inhale air to your capacity and hold (kumbhaka) as long as possible.  Then exhale throught the nostirils (rechaka).  This rechaka and kumbhaka is only for those who are practicing for the first time. This way, after inhaling,  rechka kumbhaka must be practiced 25 times per day.  This must be practiced in the morning or evening before taking food.  If one keeps practicing this properly, it not only develops the ability to hold breath for long periods (kumbhaka), but also enables to perform rechaka through the anal opening. Once you are able to do this, you should not do rechaka through the nose.  With this practice, one will be able to perform kumbhaka for up to 1.5 hours.  After acquiring this power, stand in water up to navel level and  very carefully and cautiously push out through the anal opening, “Shakti Nadi” (in the form of a big bag  that spreads from lower abdomen all the way to Muladhara chakra).  Wash it with water until it is clean and push it back through the same anal opening.

Warning: This kriya is only for hatha yogis and not for raja yogis, laya yogis and mantra yogis.

Benefits:  Eliminates impurities throughout the body, provides shining to the body and prevents diseases from getting foothold in the body.

Danta Dhouti:  This is divided into four types:   Dantamoola dhouti, jihwamoola dhouti, karna dhouti and kapalarandra dhouti.

Dantamoola dhouti:  Scrub the teeth daily in the early morning either with “kaggali” plant extract or with clean mud.  Rinse out with clean water and rub the tongue with cow’s butter. After this hold the tip of the tongue with an iron tong lightly and pull it little by little. This is only for Hatha yogis.

Benefits:  If this is practiced daily  morning and evening without fail, helps in achieving  kechari mudra, removes all defects in the tongue and improves clarity of speech.

Karna dhouti:  Clean the ears using the index and ring fingers together, insert inside the ears and turn around.

Benefits: Eliminates deafness, prevents diseases of the ear and gives power to hear the inner nadam (sound).

Kapalarandra dhouti:  Using the right thumb rub the uvula present in the back of the throat daily.

Benefits:  This kriya must be practiced daily in the morning after getting up, after lunch in the afternoon and evening.  This removes kapha dosha, cleans the nadis and gives good eye sight.


It's interesting here that Krishnamacharya gives a warning about kriyas and yet still goes ahead and describes them rather than the mudras, both kriyas and mudras were covered in his earlier book Yoga Makaranda.

A. G. Mohan writes at some length about discussing Kriyas with Krishnamacharya in his book Krishnamacharya: His Life and Teachings,

"Krishnamacharya , however, did not recommend the kriyas to his students. He considered them mostly unnecessary and sometimes risky. He would point out that the kriyas are not found in the more ancient texts;they are relatively recent practices. He would add, "The kriyas are not necessary if you know now how to do proper asana and pranayama". The Hath Yoga Prapdika supports this view:

Some teachers say that all impurities are removed by pranayama alone and other acts (the above mentioned kriyas) are not accepted by them.

Srivatsa Ramaswami, who studied with Krishnamacharya for 33 years writes

"The six (sat-kriya) practices are dhouti (stomach wash), Basti ( or vasti, colon wash)  Neti (nasal wash), Trataka (or tratakum, gazing), Nauli (stomach churn) and  Kapala bhati (skull polishing). 
Of the first there which use water , cloth or other external agencies, were not recommended or encouraged in the system in which i was trained ( i.e. Krishnamacharya). trataka, which is a good exercise for the eyes, nauli, which is for the lower abdomen and kapalabhati, which is primarily for the respiratory system, are however, frequently used by abhyasis, none of these practices introduce external aids into the system, and none is as displeasing as the first three".

Author of The Complete Book of Vinyasa Yoga and other books based on more than three decades of private study with T.Krishnamacharya, Ramaswami aims to teach yoga much as it was taught to him by the master. This, he says, has been widely done only in more fragmented form, even by other notable teachers who studied under the same guru.Ramaswami emphasizes slow, steady movements and long breaths— so much so that his Vinyasa Krama approach can make some of what is taught internationally as vinyasa yoga, look a bit like like aerobics by comparison. This is a brief guide to the Yoga Sutras of Patañjali. It is brief by way of being practical. After stating the goal of Yoga, it is basically an exposition of the eight limbs of Yoga Patañjali gives in Chapter two and the beginning of Chapter three of his Yoga Sutras.

Local author and yogi, Pam Hoxsey, learned to chant the Yoga Sutras from Srivatsa Ramaswami, who learned them from his teacher. T. Krishnamacharya. They met one-on-one for two hours each morning in two-week intervals, repeated over three years. They chanted the sutras, and then Ramaswami would discuss their meanings. This book--and the CD--is the result of their meetings together.
This version of the Yoga Sutras is comprehensive. Each sutra is written as a phrase, followed by a word-by-word translation, and then a summary of its meaning. In addition, a “tacit question” is often proposed to suggest what topic is being explained. Sometimes there are additional short “notes” to further aid in understanding.
At the end of the book is Ramaswami’s handwritten Sanskrit, followed by the chant phrases written in English with red and blue markings to indicate where the pitch goes up and down. And then there’s the CD by Pam, who has a beautiful voice, chanting the sutras. So you can both read the Yoga Sutras and learn to chant them as they were originally chanted and passed on through the centuries before Patanjali wrote them down.

The Three Stages of Life goes into such depth that I consider it the best book on yoga I've come across thus far.

"WHENEVER úR Å KRISHNAMACHARYA taught me, prayer came first. Classes started with a meditative prayer (dhyána ùloka) to Lord Viüóu for the success of the session, followed by prayers to Lord Hayagràva, the repository of all Vedic knowledge, and to Lord Käüóa. Next would be a prayer appropriate to the topic at hand—to Patañjali if it was a yoga program, to Bádaráyaóa for a program on Brahma Sâtras, to Kapila for a Sáêkhya class, or the appropriate peace chant (ùánti páôha) for upaniüadic vidyás and Vedic chanting programs. There would always be a Pârva-ùánti (beginning peace invocation), and following tradition, class would always end with a peace chant called Uttara-ùánti, normally the surrender ùloka to Lord Náráyaóa found in Viüóu-sahasranáma, and the forgiveness or küamápana-stotra, if it was Vedic chanting class. The way my guru maintained añjali-mudrá while saying the prayer was a point of study. He said that in this mudrá the palms should be slightly cupped while keeping the hands together. There should be a hollow between the palms sufficient to hold an imaginary lotus or your heart in a gesture of loving offering to the dhyeya, the object of your meditation..."

I. Complete Vinyasa Krama Asanas : In this program about 700 Vinyasas woven around several classical postures will be taught in 10 major sequences. Emphasis will also be placed on breath synchronization with the movements so important to Krishnamacharya’s krama or method. Total instruction 60 Hrs
II. Visesha Vinyasa and Viyasakrama : In this practicum, Speacial Vinyasa sequences, like several Sun Salutation methods and other unique sequences will be taught. Adapting Hatha Yoga to individual needs and developing a sustainable, progressive personal yoga practice will also be discussed. Instruction 20 Hrs
III. Pranayama Methods: In this course several Pranayama methods including Nadi Sodhana, Anuloma, Pratiloma, Viloma Ujjayi, Kapalabhati and Bhastrika and Pranayama with mantras will be taught in detail. Several textual references from Hathayoga Pradipika, Yoga Yagnyavalkya and Yoga Upanishads also will be discussed. Also teaching methods of Pranayama. Total Instruction 20 Hrs
IV. Mantras and Meditation: In this program, Mantras as a means of developing the mind towards meditation will be discussed and taught. Several classical mantras including Pranava (Om), Gayatri, Sanskrit alphabets (matruka) mantras will be taught. Introduction to vedic mantras. Total Instruction 20 Hrs
V. Sri T Krishnamacharya’s Works: Even as Sri Krishnamacharya is well known, his works which contain some of his great insights to Yoga are not yet well known. One way to study the Master’s wisdom will be to study his works. In this program, some of his important works especially Yoga Rahasya will be gone through in detail. Yoga Makaranda and his work on Yoga Sutras will also form part of the study. Total Instruction 20 Hrs
VI. Raja Yoga (Yoga Sutra) Studies: Traditionally Yoga Sutras have been the Yogi’s Bible. Sri Krishnamacharya would exhort his students to eschew any practice that may violate or is inconsistent with the teachings and thought process of the Yoga Sutras. It is incumbent on all committed Yogis to take a serious and depth look at the Sutras. In this course all the sutras will be taught with the sutra meaning. Total Instruction 20 Hrs
VII. Yoga for the Internal Organs: In this program, emphasis will be placed on a proper assessment of available yoga techniques to impart health to different parts of the body, especially the internal organs, called the kosas, as the heart (hrdaya kosa), lungs (svasa kosa), stomach (anna kosa) and others . Total Instruction 10 Hrs
VIII. Yoga Business and Teaching Methodology: Practical information on how to get a website, start a newsletter and generate word of mouth will be provided. In the second part of this course methods of teaching different aspects of yoga like asanas, pranayama, meditation, and texts to different groups of people(all ages) will be covered. Total Instruction 10 Hrs
IX. Chanting Yoga Sutras and Subtle Anatomy: This course contains two seperate segments. In the first, participants will be taught the methodology of chanting the Yoga Sutras. Practice of chanting several sutras using the conventional method of "chandas". Total Instruction 10 Hrs
X. Anatomy and Physiology: The class will take an overview of the major bones and muscles of the body. We will look at their location and function and specifically how they can be utilized in various yoga postures. Total Instruction 10 Hrs

"So, as I said, Kalamas: 'Don't go by reports, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical conjecture, by inference, by analogies, by agreement through pondering views, by probability, or by the thought, "This contemplative is our teacher." When you know for yourselves that, "These qualities are unskillful; these qualities are blameworthy; these qualities are criticized by the wise; these qualities, when adopted & carried out, lead to harm & to suffering" — then you should abandon them.' Thus was it said. And in reference to this was it said.

"Now, Kalamas, don't go by reports, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical conjecture, by inference, by analogies, by agreement through pondering views, by probability, or by the thought, 'This contemplative is our teacher.' When you know for yourselves that, 'These qualities are skillful; these qualities are blameless; these qualities are praised by the wise; these qualities, when adopted & carried out, lead to welfare & to happiness' — then you should enter & remain in them.
