This blog is essentially 'sleeping'.

I've deleted or returned to draft 80% of the blog, gone are most, if not all, of the videos I posted of Pattabhi Jois, gone are most of the posts regarding my own practice as well as most of my practice videos in YouTube, other than those linked to my Vinyasa Yoga Practice Book).

Mostly I've just retained the 'Research' posts, those relating to Krishnamacharya in particular.

Advanced C and D Asana List

The Advanced C and Advanced D series in Ashtanga yoga was initially part of the Advanced series. The Advanced series was later renamed the Advanced A & B series. To make the Advanced series more accessible, it was further broken down into the four Advanced series.
The order of the asanas in Advanced C and D has been known to change depending on when it was taught.

Based mostly on the list and photos from Absolutely Ashtanga. With some added poses from Yoga Chola (German Site). It should be noted that these two sites probably got their list from David Swenson’s Advanced Series DVD. It should also be noted that the series as seen in David’s DVD (and therefore this list) is not the same as what is being taught now in Mysore.

2. Ashtanga Syllabus 1974

'Original' 1974 Ashtanga yoga Syllabus

The 'Original' Ashtanga yoga Syllabus given to Nancy Gilgoff and David Williams by Sri K Pattabhi Jois in 1974 Mysore

"In fact, David and I had no idea that there were two separate series until the end of that first four-month trip, when we were leaving, at which point Guruji gave us a sheet of paper with a list of the postures, which were listed as Primary, Intermediate, Advanced A, and Advanced B. At this point he told us to practice one series a day, and only once a day".

  1. I have done Ashtanga Vinyasa for 3 years. I quit over an year back, but I want to get back to my practice now.I think I should start over with Primary Series. What is the time limit you recommend for doing the primary series from start to finish?

  2. Don't use the link I gave you, it's spam
I like to take my practice pretty slow Aplihs takes me around two hours. If I'm short on time I'm happy to stop at navasana and move to finishing.
90 minutes seems to be quite common for a full practice, Sharath does it in an hour on his dvd and cd.

I'd take it easy though and work back into it, do a simplified version for a month or so, leave out the tougher postures or do just an easier version. perhaps you can still do them but your body won't be used to it and you probably need to build up to it, especially if your going to get back to six days a week. David Swenson, forty -five minute variation is good.

  3. Anthony, in Krishnamacharya primary series ashtanga did he have "vinyasa" between asanas or sides? when I mean by "vinyasa" I mean after finishing 1 asana before we move to the next asana we move into an urdhva mukha svanasana and then adho mukha svanasana and then jump to seated for the next asana or side?

    1. Read it for yourself Nick
      http://www.yogastudies.org/wp-content/uploads/Yoga_Makaranda.pdf
Yes between sides and asana each vinyasa counted which is where Jois got it from. However it's a primary 'group' ( and thus more flexible) rather than a fixed 'series' although it can be practiced that way if one has enough time.

    2. hi anthony,

ok, I see it now. I was jumping around in his Yoga Makaranda allot. I just found a version of the Yoga Makaranda that at the end has step by step illustrations of allot of the primary group asana and vinyasa and it shows the "full" and half" vinyasa between.

      thanks,
      Nick

A Reminder

from Kalama sutra, translation from the Pali by Bhikkhu Bodhi This blog included.

"So, as I said, Kalamas: 'Don't go by reports, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical conjecture, by inference, by analogies, by agreement through pondering views, by probability, or by the thought, "This contemplative is our teacher." When you know for yourselves that, "These qualities are unskillful; these qualities are blameworthy; these qualities are criticized by the wise; these qualities, when adopted & carried out, lead to harm & to suffering" — then you should abandon them.' Thus was it said. And in reference to this was it said.

"Now, Kalamas, don't go by reports, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical conjecture, by inference, by analogies, by agreement through pondering views, by probability, or by the thought, 'This contemplative is our teacher.' When you know for yourselves that, 'These qualities are skillful; these qualities are blameless; these qualities are praised by the wise; these qualities, when adopted & carried out, lead to welfare & to happiness' — then you should enter & remain in them.
